OUR STORY
Mission Statement
Our goal is to teach children basic skills and practical knowledge to navigate through life with kindness and confidence.
Lessons for Life was created as a group of programs to teach children of all ages how to contribute to their own knowledge and well being, by taking responsibility for the little but important things that everyone should know to be successful in life, be it doing their own laundry, cooking a healthy meal, or knowing how to treat people with kindness and respect.
How it Started
Our founder, Laura Hughes, noticed that while many of her children’s friends were from loving, educated families, and were in highly esteemed private schools, many lacked skills in the more practical areas. She met:
- 5th graders who couldn't tie their shoes
- 8th graders who didn't know how to use a fork and knife properly
- Sophomores in high school who didn't know how to do laundry
- Seniors going off to college who couldn't cook a single meal
- College students who didn't know how to manage money or change a tire
It seemed that, with modern life so hectic, neither schools nor parents had the bandwidth to teach these skills. Thus, Lessons for Life LLC was born.
The Instructor

Laura Hughes
Laura first began teaching children at the age of 12, first as an assistant to her gymnastics instructor in grade school. She later coached gymnastics in high school, and throughout college. Upon learning her son’s private school had no puberty or sex education instruction, she volunteered to become certified to teach classes in both the 5th Grade Puberty Talk and High School Sex Education. After receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from both the parents and the students, she decided to expand her curriculum to teach more classes that would benefit children throughout their lives.
Laura is currently devoted to teaching children full time. In addition to her Puberty Talk and Sex Ed courses, she teaches Cooking, Life Skills, Modern Etiquette, and her newest course, Life Skills for College Freshmen. This last course, requested by parents of high school juniors and seniors, is designed to teach high school seniors basic life skills, money management, personal protection, social and coping skills in order to prepare them for their first year at college.
